Strategic Outreach Initiatives
University College believes it is important to establish formal strategic relationships
to serve students as they travel along their educational journey. Our Strategic Outreach
Initiatives unit provides a structural connection for a variety of signature programs—Achieve
Atlanta, Coca-Cola Scholars and Thrive. Programming is in place to enrich the academic
success, improve retention, and strengthen engagement of targeted student populations.
Building on University College’s mission of promoting diversity and inclusion as a
vital part of student success, key populations served include first-generation students,
veterans, nontraditional students, under-served groups, and students from rural/urban
locations. The goal of the unit is to recruit, retain, and provide academic support
services and co-curricular programming that will result in degree completion.
Linda Lyons, Ed.D.
Director of Strategic Outreach & Diversity Initiatives
Responsible for daily oversight of the college’s strategic planning process, diversity
initiatives, as well as oversee University College’s student outreach programs such
as Coca-Cola Scholars, Thrive, and Achieve Atlanta. Dr. Lyons is an Associate Professor
of Education and has published on the scholarship of teaching and learning that is
germane to multicultural education. Her research concentration examines intercultural
competence in higher education through a collaborative approach with campus constituents
and other stakeholders when developing and executing cultural awareness curriculum
and co-curricular initiatives.
Shae Smith, M.A.
Co-curricular Program Specialist
Responsible for daily oversight of co-curricular programming, recruitment and enrollment
for the Thrive program, as well as co-curricular and academic support for students
in Achieve Atlanta and the Coca-Cola Scholars programs. Ms. Smith is formerly a lecturer,
having taught the first-year seminar and communication courses for nearly a decade,
after serving in leadership in the non-profit sector and higher education. She brings
experience in program and organizational leadership, and community partnerships, as
well as a broad knowledge of students in transition into University College's strategic

Initiatives. Anne brings years of experience in operational management. Responsible
for analyzing and developing strategies for new projects, provide recommendations
and direction to achieve project goals and ensures that the unit’s goals relate to
special projects and outreach operations. She will also assist in grant proposal writing
and fundraising activities.
